Specialist Q&A

by Larisa N. Likver, MD

What is neuro-prolotherapy?

Neuro-prolotherapy (NPT, also called neural prolotherapy) is a treatment technique used to help patients who suffer from chronic pain issues. The technique uses a series of injections of a medical-grade sugar solution administered along neural pathways located in areas of focused and diffuse pain. NPT works by providing immediate relief of persistent pain while also stimulating healing of damaged tissues for long-term results.

How does NPT work?

NPT uses sugar-based solutions to help prevent the injury response associated with pain sensations in the body. When tissue is injured, the body naturally releases pro-inflammatory chemicals that cause pain, swelling and other injury-related effects. Although the precise mechanism of NPT is still being studied, researchers believe it works by preventing those chemicals from binding with specific receptors that are involved in the development of pain sensations, preventing pain from occurring and helping to restore nerves to their normal function.

Is NPT the same as prolotherapy?

No; while both use a series of injections to help heal tissues, relieve pain and promote better function in injured areas, the techniques rely on different solutions and different injections sites and techniques to achieve their results. One of the most significant differences between the two lies in their specific applications: Prolotherapy uses deeper targeted injections to treat musculoskeletal components like tendons and ligaments, while neuro-prolotherapy uses more superficial injections of its solutions to target nerves and interrupt neural pathways responsible for the pain response. As a result, neuro-prolotherapy is less invasive than prolotherapy.

Is treatment very painful?

Because the injections are made superficially, discomfort is minimal and treatment is usually very well tolerated.

How many treatments will I need?

Most patients experience an immediate reduction in painful symptoms, with optimal results achieved in five to eight treatments spaced a week or two apart.
